Family Trip 2019: Part 1 Chicago

Bo's brother Sonny and his family moved to Iowa last year, and we had already planned on going to Chicago and Nauvoo the year before that.  But, them moving there made our trip even better!

We left from IF airport and flew to Chicago Wednesday.  Our first stop was our hotel and then Chicago style Pizza.  I, of course, didn't eat it, but the rest of the family loved it.  It looked amazing!

Later that night, Sonny met up with us at our hotel, and the kids swam for a little while as we adults caught up.

Thursday, we woke up to a HUGE thunderstorm.  It was a bit of a bummer because we were planning on going to Six Flags.  But, the weather looked like it was going to get better, so we stopped at Target to get ponchos and headed to the park.  It was pouring there, and we were pretty much the first people there.  The best part was that there were no lines. Getting in and the ride the two younger kids wanted to ride had no lines either.  All of the rides were closed but three for about the first hour.  But, the kids got to go on the Justice League until their hearts were content.  This ride was one that they loved from the last time we went, and the line was super long, so they didn't get to go only a couple of times.

We had a great day.  The three older kids had a blast riding all the scary rides with Bo.  I rode a couple but mostly had fun spending the day with Emily watching the younger kids with their rides.  Jackson really got out of his shell and rode all the scary rides too.  We were pretty amazed by that.  In the end, it was a blessing that it rained.  The weather was perfect, and we weren't too hot.  Plus, it wasn't jam-packed, so the lines were short.  The thunderstorm was a blessing in disguise.

Side-note: we got to see lightning bugs for the first time that night!  They were so cool!

On Friday, we headed straight into Chicago.  The traffic was horrible, so it took a bit, but it was fun to see the city as we drove in.  We went to the top of the Willis Tower and walked around the city.  We also walked to the bean, and to top the night off, we went to the Broadway play Cats.  It was entertaining to go, and the boys even had fun.

It was a super hot day, so the kids did get tired walking, and they got to ride the train some of them for the first time ever.

Saturday was a travel day.  We took a train to Sonny's.  We then drove to Nauvoo for some pioneer games and the pageant.  The kids had a great time playing stickball and making crafts that night.  But about 5 minutes into the pageant, it was canceled because of another thunderstorm.  We were bummed because we went at that time just so we could see the pageant.  But, the thunderstorm display was the best I've ever seen.  We were stuck on a bridge for about 20 minutes and got to see some fantastic strikes.
